Get Wrinkles Out of Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere Wrinkles Are Easy to Fix

Storage creases, travel wrinkles, and fold lines all come out of cashmere quickly with the right method. The fiber relaxes when it absorbs moisture and warmth, releasing the wrinkle as it dries in a smooth position. No harsh treatment needed — cashmere responds to gentle methods better than aggressive ones.

Method 1: Handheld Steamer (Fastest and Safest)

A handheld garment steamer is the best tool for cashmere wrinkles. It delivers moisture and gentle heat without any direct contact with the fiber.

  1. Lay the sweater flat on a clean surface or hang on a padded hanger
  2. Hold the steamer 6-8 inches from the fabric
  3. Pass slowly from top to bottom — let the steam penetrate, do not rush
  4. For deep creases, hold the steamer 4-5 inches away for a few extra seconds on the crease line
  5. Let the sweater cool and dry for 10 minutes before wearing or folding

Key rule: Never touch the steamer nozzle to the cashmere. The hot metal plate can scorch fine fibers or leave water spots. The steam itself does the work from a distance.

A basic handheld steamer costs $25-40 and is the single best maintenance tool for anyone who owns cashmere, wool, or silk.

Method 2: Damp Towel Press (No Equipment Needed)

Works with items you already have at home. Takes longer than steaming but is equally safe.

  1. Lay the wrinkled sweater flat
  2. Dampen a clean cotton towel — wring until damp, not dripping
  3. Place the damp towel over the wrinkled areas
  4. Press gently and evenly with your palms — no rubbing
  5. Leave the towel in place for 15-20 minutes
  6. Remove the towel and smooth the cashmere with your hands
  7. Lay flat to finish drying

The moisture and gentle weight of the towel relax the fibers. This method works well for storage fold lines and moderate creases.

Method 3: Bathroom Steam (Travel Trick)

The quickest fix when you are away from home or in a rush:

  1. Hang the sweater on a padded hanger in the bathroom
  2. Run a hot shower with the door closed
  3. Let the steam build for 10-15 minutes — you do not need to shower, just run the water
  4. The ambient steam relaxes the wrinkles
  5. Remove and lay flat to dry before wearing

This works for light wrinkles and travel creases. Deep fold lines may need the steamer or damp towel method.

Do Not Iron Cashmere

A standard iron is too hot, too heavy, and too direct for cashmere:

  • The soleplate temperature (even on "low") exceeds what cashmere fibers tolerate
  • The weight compresses the fiber's natural loft, creating shiny flat spots called "iron shine"
  • A momentary pause creates a permanent scorch mark
  • The concentrated steam burst can leave water marks

If an iron is genuinely your only option: set to lowest heat, turn the sweater inside out, place a damp cotton pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric, and keep the iron moving constantly. But a $30 steamer eliminates this risk entirely.

Preventing Wrinkles

  • Fold along natural garment lines — at the waist and along the sleeves, not randomly
  • Do not stack heavy items on cashmere — compression creases are the most common wrinkle source
  • Store cashmere on top of the stack, not buried under denim and wool
  • For travel: stuff the body and sleeves with tissue paper, then fold and place in a breathable garment bag
  • Rotate which sweater sits on top to distribute compression evenly across your cashmere collection
