Clean a Cashmere Sweater at Home

Not Every Cleaning Is a Wash

Most people assume cleaning cashmere means washing it. It does not. There are four levels of cashmere cleaning, and only the last one involves water and detergent. Using the lightest effective method each time reduces fiber stress and extends the sweater's life by years.

Level 1: Airing (After Every Wear)

After wearing, lay the sweater flat on a clean surface in a well-ventilated room. Leave overnight. This lets moisture from body heat evaporate and allows odors to dissipate naturally. Most of the time, this is all the cleaning your cashmere needs between washes.

Do not spray with fabric freshener or perfume — these coat the fibers with chemicals that build up over time and attract dirt.

Level 2: Spot Cleaning (Isolated Stains)

A single stain does not require washing the entire sweater. Spot cleaning addresses the stain while leaving the rest of the garment untouched.

  1. Blot the stain with a clean white cloth — press straight down, no rubbing
  2. Apply a small drop of cashmere detergent or baby shampoo directly to the stain
  3. Work the detergent in gently with your fingertip using small circular motions
  4. Dampen a clean cloth with cold water and blot the treated area to rinse
  5. Repeat until the detergent is removed
  6. Lay flat and let the damp area air dry completely

For specific stain types (wine, oil, coffee, blood), each requires a different treatment agent. See our stain removal guide for the full breakdown.

Level 3: Steam Freshening (Odor Without Stains)

When a sweater smells but has no visible soiling — after wearing in a smoky environment, or when airing alone did not fully remove body odor — steaming freshens the fiber without a full wash.

  1. Lay the sweater flat or hang on a padded hanger
  2. Hold a handheld steamer 6-8 inches from the fabric
  3. Pass slowly over the entire sweater, focusing on the underarm, neckline, and cuff areas
  4. The steam kills odor-causing bacteria and releases trapped smells from the fiber
  5. Let the sweater cool and dry for 10 minutes

No steamer? Hang the sweater in a bathroom while running a hot shower for 10-15 minutes. The ambient steam has the same freshening effect.

Level 4: Full Hand Wash (Every 3-7 Wears)

When the sweater has been worn multiple times, has overall soiling, or needs washing before seasonal storage — a full hand wash is the right choice.

  1. Fill a basin with cold water (30°C max) and one teaspoon of cashmere detergent
  2. Turn inside out, submerge gently, soak 20 minutes
  3. Press gently a few times during soaking — no rubbing, scrubbing, or twisting
  4. Rinse in clean cold water until clear (2-3 rinses)
  5. Roll in a dry towel and press to remove water
  6. Lay flat on a fresh towel, reshape to original dimensions, air dry 12-24 hours

What Not to Use

  • Regular laundry detergent — contains enzymes that break down protein fibers like cashmere
  • Fabric softener — coats fibers, reduces breathability, dulls softness over time
  • Bleach — destroys the fiber permanently
  • Stain remover sprays — most contain harsh chemicals not formulated for protein fibers
  • Hot water — causes felting and shrinkage

When Dry Cleaning Makes Sense

Home cleaning handles 95% of cashmere care needs. Reserve dry cleaning for:

  • Structured cashmere garments (blazers, coats) that would lose shape in water
  • Stubborn stains that home treatment has not removed after two attempts
  • Cashmere blended with dry-clean-only materials (silk lining, leather trim)

For regular sweaters, cardigans, and scarves, home cleaning is preferred — dry cleaning solvents strip the natural lanolin oils that keep cashmere soft.
